Directions to #30 McGillivray Creek, Sun Peaks, BC from Seattle

From Seattle, take I-5 NORTH to Bellingham. Take exit 256A to MERIDIAN STREET / Bellis Fair, turn right at the end of the exit ramp and head north on Meridian.

Go straight, past Lynden, then turn right at the traffic light at Badger Road to head toward the town of Sumas.

You’ll have to jog left, then right, but you won’t need to make any turns until you get to the stop sign at the south end of Sumas. At the stop sign, turn left (North) and go through Sumas to the border crossing.

We tend to get gas in Sumas because US prices are always lower per gallon. We’ve found getting gas in Sumas will get us to just outside of Kamloops. Filling up in Kamloops is a good idea because there are no gas stations in Sun Peaks. We fill up at a Husky station just north of Kamloops, and that usually gets us all the way back to Sumas on the way home.

Passports are ideal for getting through the border, though a driver’s license is ok. For kids it helps to have a copy of birth certificates and an approval letter from a spouse if both parents are not present. Dogs should have a rabies vaccine certificate. Bringing small amounts of wine/liquor is ok but no fruits, veggies or meats are supposed to cross the border.

Go straight after the border crossing until you reach Canadian Highway 1 at Abbotsford. Get onto Highway 1 going East toward Chilliwack and Hope.

If you’re hungry, there are tons of joints in Chilliwack.

Keep on the TRANS-CANADA Highway 1 eastbound toward Hope. After Hope, you will be given the option of three highways: Choose the COQUIHALLA Highway (Highway 5) to Kamloops. (Right outside of Kamloops, Highway 5 merges back into Highway 1. )

The Coquihalla is a high mountain pass, so be prepared for any kind of weather. They keep it well cleared but chains are advisable, just in case. If they close the Coquihalla you can take the valley road by staying on Highway 1 – it will just take longer to get to Kamloops.

Buying groceries in Kamloops is your best bet, since Sun Peaks only has small convenience stores. After entering the city of Kamloops, look for the Columbia St. exit. Between Columbia St W and Summit Drive are a bunch of malls with grocery stores. Both close at 11. Use Summit Drive to get back onto Highway 1/5 again.

Back on the highway, 1 and 5 will soon split again. Take the Highway 5 exit northbound to Jasper. Look for the signs to Heffley Creek and Sun Peaks and turn right into Heffley Creek. Then immediately turn left at the Heffley General Store. There is a directional sign for Sun Peaks here. Proceed along this two-lane road up the mountain… all the way to Sun Peaks Village

map7.png

The main road from Heffley Creek to the resort will pass through the village and end at a stop sign. Turn right here. As you drive, you will pass on the right a ReMax real estate office, a sledding area and kid snow mobile area, and a road before seeing the McGillivray Creek Complex sign. Turn right into the complex (at the MC sign), then immediately turn left at the T. Our unit (#30) will be on your left. It is in the second duplex structure.

You can not dial long distance direct out of our unit, so if you want to call long distance using the land phone, have a calling card. Also, the management company phone number is on the refrigerator, if problems arise. The hot tub is in the back on the ground level – use the back door of the garage to get there. It’s checked and cared for daily by the management company and so should be hot and ready to go. Have a great time!
